Think of sales like dating. There’s a cadence and a rhythm, so you’re neither moving too fast nor too slow. For example, pitching someone in the first direct message (DM) is the equivalent of a drunk man asking a woman to marry him at a bar. It doesn’t work.

There are also skills you would have to master in dating that translates over to sales – such as being interested in someone else, how you communicate with the other person, and also knowing how to express your own needs. In sales, that looks like leading with curiosity, your tone, and asking for the business.

At the end of the day, sales is just about building relationships and relating to other humans to help them solve their problems – you just happen to get paid for solving the problem. Master Salespeople truly understand this concept, and it’s what they lead with. And that is the opposite of what most people do, which is either try to get a deal done too soon or avoid making deals altogether.

Something else Master Salespeople understand is the power of conviction and selling with heart. The best closers have hearts and can get people to move in a way that is open and feels good. If we were to use dating as an analogy, who has the most prospects? The confident person with an open heart. It’s the same in sales.

And finally, let’s talk about follow-up. A lot of people don’t want to do follow-ups because they don’t want to annoy people. In reality, being good at follow-up shows consistency and that you can be trusted – In the same way, a woman wants a man to communicate and be reliable between dates so she can trust him.

In summary, sales and dating are the same thing. Learn the skills and have fun with it.
