Why are you still trying to grow your business all by yourself? If you have yet to learn the Rule of 250, today is the day to learn!

Each and EVERY one of us knows at least 250 people – family, friends, colleagues, community, others we went to school with, served in the military with, etc. Yet, we judge them… they don’t know anyone I need to know. They aren’t in my business. They’re my family, for heaven’s sake! Knock it off! Each of these people, like you, DO KNOW other people and would be glad to help you if you asked! Do your homework. No one is going to figure out for you who you need to know! Specifically, who are the people you want to meet, and what is the name of the company? Pick three people, three companies, and then ASK those you know – without judgment – if they know them and if they would introduce you. Think about yourself. Would you do it if someone asked you if you would introduce them to someone you knew? Most of us would.

Therefore, if you would do it, why do you think others would not do the same? Don’t judge yourself, don’t judge them. just ASK for what you want – you, your sales forecast, and your bank account will be very glad you did!! My all-time favorite client story who learned the Rule of 250 the hard way had been a client for 4 years, and the number one company he wanted to get in was General Electric. Like many people where we live, he was not from this area, so when it came time for holidays, he would have to travel to his family. Every year when he went, he would complain and make his family sound like wolves. And while I do know some families are awful, this guy was so terrific I just could not imagine they were as bad as he proclaimed. As we were having our call before he left, he began complaining again about them, and I just flat-out told him ENOUGH! I could not believe they were that bad.

Furthermore, his grandmother would not live forever, so he needed to buck up buttercup and go – and suggests, maybe, he should treat them like strangers, like when he goes to a business luncheon. We had both been at many public events together, and he had always been social, well-mannered, and capable of having intelligent conversations on many subjects. He was irritated, and so was I. Fast forward – Monday morning after the holiday, I received a voicemail from someone SCREAMING! It took me a moment to realize the person screaming was my client. Obviously, he is not going to be my client any longer, but I am ornery enough to call and ask what he is carrying on about.

He did not say hello or anything. With gritted teeth, he asked, “What is the #1 company I have been trying to get into for 4 years?”. General Electric, I said. To which he replied, “Guess who my uncle is?” Of course, I had no clue. His uncle was the president of… wait for it… you got it! A division of General Electric! I could not hardly help myself before asking, “And how long has he been your uncle?” 45 years!

He was in General Electric and doing business within the next quarter.
